Licences

Equilibrium Labs publishes under two licences, consistently, across everything it releases. Nothing is held back under a third — see governance for why that is a commitment rather than a stage.

Code

Source code — the skill validator and any tooling that follows — is released under the MIT licence. Use it, fork it, modify it, ship it commercially, with attribution and no warranty.

Written material

The skills, the method standards, and the documentation are released under CC BY 4.0. Share and adapt freely, including commercially, with attribution and a link to the licence.

Where the two overlap — a skill file containing example code — the example code may be used under either licence, at your choice.

Why these two

MIT is the least restrictive common open-source licence: no conditions on downstream use beyond attribution. CC BY 4.0 is its closest equivalent for non-code work. Both are irrevocable for versions already published, which is precisely the property the project wants: the commitment not to relicense is not a promise you have to take on trust.

Restrictive or non-commercial licences were considered and rejected. They would have blocked the project from grant programmes that require results be free and open in their entirety, and — more to the point — a standard nobody may reuse commercially is a standard that does not get adopted.

Contributions

By contributing you agree that your contribution is licensed under the same terms: MIT for code, CC BY 4.0 for written material. There is no contributor licence agreement and no copyright assignment. See contribute.
